Pair of Ellipses

Pair of Ellipses takes its name from dual relationships between two slip-cast vases shaped as ellipsoids. Within each, a second dialogue unfolds between the ellipsoid body and its elliptical mouth. A subtle transition that preserves the integrity of the ellipse, yet introduces a gentle tension as the form begins to pull away from itself.
Geometrically, an ellipse carries an inherent instability. Its longest axis is most susceptible to slumping in the kiln. The Pair of Ellipses works address that tendency directly, preserving the integrity of the ellipse through careful calibration - a consideration that partly explains the rarity of such forms in ceramic work.
